The Wood Wife
by Terri Windling

I enjoyed this more and more as I got into it. I'm not one to read fantasy, although I enjoy Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. And I do like how James Doss flirts with the spirit-life of the desert in his mysteries.

Now that I've read this, I want to read more of Terry Windling and look into the other authors she mentions in her author's note at the end of the book. Yes, there was some heavy-handed lecturing about poachers and the abuse of land by developers: I'm not sure it was needed for the story. But it was easy enough to skip over to stick to the story.
